Standing together at the overlook he appraised the land about us:

“In the copse and brush we used to play, with careless, effortless delight

and our car windscreens would brim with insects and trees would bristle with songs.”

I imagined it.

Then (with a wry turn) she said:

“Hah! I remember when the trees were forests

and in rich blooming hours we found untamed adventure,

and each season brought in a new harvest for the senses.”

I thought on this:

When I am old,

what natural intricacies will I recount? With that same faraway gaze,

to children for whom they will be only stories.
